about

FIVE

The song Five actually came to me one day While reading the Tao Te Ching. I came across a passage that read:

TWELVE

The five colors blind the eye
The five tones deafen the ear
The five flavors dull the taste
Racing and hunting madden the mind
Precious things lead one astray

Therefore the sage is guided by what he feels and not by what he sees
He lets go of that and chooses this
- Lao Tzu

I was reading this back home in rural Kansas while waiting on a friend in an old pickup at a Truck Stop near the Res. It was Friday evening, and I watched the farmers and ranchers walk out with booze, twelve-packs of beer and chewing tobacco cans that fit neatly into the worn back pocket of their Wranglers like a holster. They climbed into pickup trucks with rifle racks and rusted out 70s Camaros and Novas with Bondo plastered on the wheel wells.

I got to thinking how these fellas might translate the passage above. The song came pretty fast.

lyrics

Five

My baby tells me she wants me tonight
We got 5 more hours til the morning light

Spent all day in the burning sun
Got five more minutes til the day is done
I got four on the floor and a loaded gun
Makes 5 good reasons why you better run

People try to tell me the end is near
Try to tell me life is worth this fear
People try to tell me the end is near

I told my preacher I don’t hate
It takes all 5 senses to seal my fate
Prayed to the lord, and he said “oh well”
Commit five more sins and you go to hell

People try to tell me the end is near
Try to tell me life is worth this fear
People try to tell me the end is near
